#489 The Breeders, 'Cannonball' (1993)
I haven't listened to the radio much since the late 1980s. You'd think someone of my age would be familiar with this, but only the name of the band rings a bell. Couldn't say anything about it. So no preconceived ideas on this one.
Here it goes...
I've been trying to resist the temptation to learn about the songs before I listen, but I do read the paragraph about it on the Rolling Stone list. So second appearance of Kim Deal, who was in the Pixies. I like it, bounces along nicely. The vocals are catchy. Top 500 of all time? Probably not for me, but it's good.
I love this song. It is one I can listen too quite a bit and not get tired of it. It would probably be in my Top 500. The soft/harsh dynamic of The Pixies (later used by Nirvana) definitely fit this and the rhythm section is en fuego!
ReplyDeleteAnother great Breeders song is called "Safari". It came out year or two earlier when the band also had Throwing Muses' Tanya Donnelly in it as another guitarist. The MV is based on the classic Black Sabbath "Paranoid" one which was filmed in front of a blue screen so the band seemed to hover in the air.
When the Breeders formed, Kim Deal made her twin Kelley learn to play guitar with her having no prior knowledge. Tanya left and Kim and Kelley played all guitar going forward. I kind of crushed on Kelley for awhile, I have to admit.
